What is a swing or “pendulum” in height safety? And why should this be avoided?

A swing (or “pendulum”) fall is a fall in which at the point of fall arrest the vertical trajectory of the user is diverted into a swing or pendular trajectory with significant horizontal velocity.

Falls of this type should, where possible, be prevented as they are likely to lead to severe or possibly fatal injuries due to potential collisions with structures. Please see below illustration.
